Hyperthyroidism Treatment

Endocrinology

Endocrinology is a branch of healthcare science that deals with the disorders and functioning of the endocrine system, and its secretions known as hormones. Endocrinology also treats developmental events proliferation, differentiation, and growth. Sometimes an Endocrinologist may also examine the behavioral and / or psychological activities of growth and development, metabolism, tissue function, sensory perception by hormones, sleep, reproduction, digestion, movement, respiration, lactation, excretion, stress and mood. A pediatric endocrinologist specializes in the treatment and cure of these diseases in children.

There are two specialized branches under Endocrinology namely - Behavioral Endocrinology and Comparative Endocrinology. The Endocrine System is a connected family of various glands, situated in different parts of the body that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream instead of employing a duct-based system. Hormones have a myriad of functions and modes of action, each having its own unique effect on various organs, and in certain cases, an organ may be the recipient of more than one hormone.

About Endocrinology:

The endocrine system is a cluster of glands that secrete hormones. Hormones are essentially chemicals which impact the functioning and efficiency of various organ systems in the body.

Examples:

  • Thyroid hormone
  • Growth hormone
  • Insulin

The endocrine system employs a number of feedback mechanisms. In most common cases, a primary hormone (like a thyroid stimulating hormone) will interact with another secondary hormone to control its function and / or secretion of another hormone (like a thyroid hormone). If it so happens that the secondary hormone is more in quantity, it will increase chances of negative feedback.

Hormones:

Hormones can be broadly classified into three buckets based on a study of their chemical composition.

Procedures Conducted at Aster Hospitals:

Amines:Norepinephrine, dopamine, and epinephrine are some examples of Amines that are obtained from single amino acids.

Peptide and Protein: Peptides are the hormones secreted by the Pituitary Gland.

Steroids:Cholesterol is the parent compound for Steroid hormones.

Endocrinology also involves the study of the diseases of the endocrine system. It may relate to too little or too much secretion of a hormone, too little or too much action of a hormone, or problems with receiving the hormone. It also covers the gambit of diabetes treatment.
