6 Myths and Facts on Acne

What is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition that is caused by the clogging of pores with oil and dead skin cells which primarily affects teenagers. However, even adults sometimes experience cases of acne.

What are some common myths about acne?

Whether it is acne in terms of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples or nodules there are several myths surrounding them. Here are some of them:

MYTH I: Acne is Caused by Stress

FACT: It is true that stress may affect the hormone balance and levels which thereby causes acne. But stress alone is not an indicator of acne outbursts.

MYTH II: Washing Your Face Helps Prevent Acne

FACT : This is a very common myth but since acne is not caused by dirt, washing your face often only makes your skin dry and irritable which may worsen your case of acne. It is suggested to limit washing your face to twice daily.

MYTH III: Chocolates and Other Dairy Products Cause Acne

FACT: There are hints and rumors that dairy products like chocolates and sometimes even caffeine may prompt acne due to the hormones and bacteria present in them, but, there is not enough medical data to support this as a solid cause of acne.

MYTH IV: Adults Don’t Get Acne

FACT: While teenage acne is common, it does not mean that adult acne is not. It is true that acne at the age of 14 and 40 may look different and may be fewer in number, but all acne is the same.

MYTH V: Use Toothpaste to Clear Your Pimples

FACT: The contents of toothpastes are such that they can help dry a pimple. But these products are not meant for facial usage and has substances that can cause irritable skin. Instead use spot treatment products that are meant for skin application.

MYTH VI: Only Facial Acne Exists

FACT: Facial acne is common and the most visible but body acne is a condition as well. Apart from the face, acne also appears on the chest, upper back, shoulders, arms and sometimes underarms and intimate areas as well.
