Babymoon Tips for Pregnant Parents
More people seem to be embarking on babymoons, or trips that expectant parents take to relax before they have an extra carry-on in the form of a bundle of joy. The purpose of a babymoon today is for mom- and dad-to-be to spend time with each other to nurture the couple’s relationship before becoming parents. Babymoons tend to be more indulgent than regular vacations as babymooners generally get pampered and relax.
When planning your Babymoon, consider the following tips:
Time It Right
For most pregnant women, the second trimester is the most pleasant time to travel. By this time, the nausea of the first trimester should be gone and the discomfort of the third trimester is yet to come. According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is between 18-24 weeks.
Keep your doctor in the loop.
Get in touch with your doctor before you book any trip to make sure she thinks your itinerary is safe and to talk about any necessary precautions you might need to take, such as vaccines you might need (and whether they are safe during pregnancy) and foods you should avoid.
Minimise Travel Time
Remember, the goal of your babymoon is rest and relaxation. Enduring a five-hour layover or a ten-hour car ride on the way to your destination is not a relaxing start to your trip.
Know Before You Go
Identify the nearest medical centre to your babymoon destination. Take the center’s address and contact information with you, along with the phone number of your obstetrician.
If you go anywhere out-of-state or abroad, triple check how your travel insurance treats pregnancy, and inquire if you need to get an extra policy to cover you in a case of complications or early labour.
If your babymoon involves a flight, look into your airline of choice’s policy on expectant mothers to see if they have any bans or exclusions, or if they require a doctor’s note (some actually do).
